WHERE IS THE STRIKE ZONE TODAY?

Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, sent a memo to umpires in February directing them to 'raise the top of the strike zone to two inches above the top of the uniform pants.'

Did he say 'raise'? That's below what the rules state: 'a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform.' Aren't umpires already impartially following the exact rules of baseball? The issue is style. Umpires are taught different methods of calling the game according to the league they serve.

MLB finally decided to take a handle on training and supervising umpires. Many umpires resigned in protest and MLB accepted 22 resignations. Starting this month there are 25 new umpires in the parks. Catch a game and let them hear MLB fan razzing.
