LOUDSPEAKERS

Stereo loudspeakers come in pairs, generally, and are known as a "system." Some have three, four, or more separate pieces, but most are left-and-right pairs. Each speaker typically has two or three "elements" or "drivers" -- the individual speakers in the cabinet. The smallest driver is the "tweeter" -- it handles the high frequencies. The largest is the "woofer" -- it's the low-frequency driver. Two-way systems have only woofer and tweeter, but three-way systems add a third driver, the "midrange." As its name implies, it handles the middle range of sounds between the woofer and tweeter.
