CATNIP, ANYONE?
Did you know that catnip is an effective insect repellant? Me neither. According to Iowa State University scientists in a paper presented at an American Chemical Society meeting, two entomologists are seeking a patent for nepetalactone, an oil in catnip, to use it as an insect repellant against such pests as mosquitoes and cockroaches. The oil, which gives catnip its odor, was found to be 10 times more effective than DEET. I don't know if the oil will be available this next summer, but even if it isn't, growing some extra catnip might be a good plan!
