ATAVISM
Atavism is a noun meaning the occurrence in an individual of a trait from a remote ancestor, due to a recombination of ancestral genes. The word can also be used for the individual himself, such as saying a particular man was a throwback to an earlier era.
Moving carefully around the moonlit room, she searched for clues, grateful to the atavism that gave her good vision in the dark and helped her avoid that odorous bucket, which her poor-sighted mother surely would have tripped over before taking two steps.
